Welcome friend! If you've found yourself here, it's likely because your Symptom Burden Assessment has highlighted the Small Intestine (SI) as an area of focus for you. I totally understand the impact these symptoms can have on your daily life and overall well-being. That's why I'm here to guide you towards understanding, managing, and ultimately conquering your SI symptoms.

In this blog, we will explore the essential role this organ plays in your overall well-being and provide practical solutions to alleviate your symptoms. Let's get started!

Symptoms that Speak Your Language:

Living with small intestine imbalances can manifest in various symptoms. Do any of these ring a bell?

  • Looking pregnant by the end of the day, even when you haven't consumed a feast.
  • Trying to squeeze into your favorite jeans, only to realize they no longer accommodate your inflated belly.
  • Feeling self-conscious and avoiding social situations because you're constantly battling the bloat.
  • Specific foods leave you feeling fatigued, bloated, or uncomfortable, impacting your daily energy levels.
  • Dealing with the frustrating cycle of constipation followed by bouts of diarrhea, making you feel unsettled and off-balance.
  • Experiencing adverse reactions to certain foods, triggering symptoms such as hives, itching, digestive discomfort, bloating, or changes in bowel movements.
  • Suffering from respiratory issues like asthma, recurring sinus infections, or chronic nasal congestion that make it hard to function, let alone breath.

Living with imbalances in the small intestine can be a real challenge, and I can relate to the frustrations firsthand. I remember the days when I would wake up with a flat stomach, only to bloat out with the tiniest bit of food, or sometimes just water! It was disheartening to go through the day already feeling sluggish and weighed down.

Planning a fun outing was a crapshoot because my confidence was shattered when I looked in the mirror and saw my inflated belly. None of my clothes fit properly, and I found myself avoiding social situations because I felt self-conscious and uncomfortable. It was a constant battle to find relief.

If you've experienced any of these common complaints, it's time to look at the health of your small intestine.

The Ripple Effect: How Small Intestine Health Influences Your Body

The main role of SI is nutrient absorption – so it literally impacts every cell! In fact, 95% of all absorption (nutrients, water, electrolytes) goes down in the small intestine. This is why the health of your small intestine extends its impact beyond its immediate location and influences various systems in your body:

Nutrient absorption: if you’re having issues in the SI you’re likely to see issues in minerals, fatty acids and vitamins. Without these star players I see lots of dysfunction downstream and the body will express symptoms you might not think are related to your gut – hello flakey and dry skin, acne, fatigue, brain fog…

An imbalanced small intestine can trickle into issues in the large intestine such as constipation, diarrhea, and irregular bowel movements.

And of course we need the nutrients absorbed by our SI to nourish our hormones — think blood sugar, reproductive hormones, adrenals and thyroid.

Lastly, the small intestine houses a significant portion of immune cells and plays a crucial role in immune function. When the small intestine is compromised, it can weaken the immune system, making you more susceptible to infections, allergies, and autoimmune conditions.

Understanding the intricate connections between your small intestine and these various aspects of your body reveals the significant impact that small intestine health can have on your overall well-being. By prioritizing the health of your small intestine, you can promote proper digestion, optimal nutrient absorption, balanced hormones, robust immune function, and improved overall health.

But Why Tho? Unveiling the Culprits Behind Small Intestine Dysfunction

You've learned about the significant role your small intestine plays in your overall well-being, but now it's time to uncover the reasons behind its misfortune. Let's shed light on the culprits:

  1. Dysfunction North: The dysfunction starts right at the top with Upper GI dysfunction. Insufficient stomach acid can hinder the breakdown of food, leaving the small intestine struggling to perform its vital tasks.

  2. Liver/Gallbladder Issues: When the liver and gallbladder fail to produce enough bile, things can quickly become stagnant. This stagnation becomes a breeding ground for infection, causing disruptions in the small intestine. SIBO anyone?

  3. Poor Pancreatic Output: The pancreas plays a crucial role in producing enzymes that aid in digestion. Insufficient pancreatic output can leave the small intestine grappling with undigested food, which can damage the delicate intestinal villi. This damage can lead to food sensitivities and a leaky gut.

  4. Undigested Food Damaging Intestinal Villi: When undigested food particles make their way to the small intestine, they can wreak havoc on the intestinal villi. These tiny, finger-like projections are responsible for absorbing nutrients. When damaged, they can lead to food sensitivities and a compromised gut barrier.

Understanding these common causes can help understand the path to healing and restoring small intestine health. Together, we'll navigate the intricacies of your gut and provide you with the guidance and support you need to reclaim a vibrant and thriving digestive system.

Your Personalized Path to Lasting Relief: Taking the Next Steps

Picture waking up with a renewed sense of vitality, enjoying meals without worrying about bloating or discomfort, and experiencing regular, balanced bowel movements. Visualize a life where you can savor your favorite foods without the fear of triggering allergies or sensitivities. This is the vision of what's possible when your small intestine is functioning optimally.

Now, let's explore practical solutions that can help you achieve this symptom-free reality.

Support Your Upper GI & Liver / Gallbladder Health:

And as I mentioned in my Upper GI blog, when digestion falters, absorption suffers, leaving your cells deprived of vital nutrients. So we want to make sure you’re also supporting the factors up stream. Don't forget that your pancreas, Liver and Gallbladder are key players too!

Relaxed Eating Habits:

Embrace a more relaxed approach to eating, allowing your body to digest food more effectively. Practice mindful eating, savoring each bite, and taking time to chew thoroughly. Remove distractions such as your phone, TV, reading, or multitasking - this is a stress-free zone. Be the slowest eater at the table, avoid rushing through meals, as it can contribute to digestive discomfort. By adopting relaxed eating habits, you can reduce stress on your digestive system and support optimal functioning. Often, we can speed up the healing process and avoid unnecessary supplements by simply sitting down and chewing our food better.

Pace Your Beverage Consumption:

Sip beverages, such as water or herbal tea, minimally during mealtime to avoid diluting digestive juices. Consume the majority of your beverages between meals to preserve the effectiveness of your digestive system. This simple adjustment can make a significant difference in promoting optimal digestion. Don’t underestimate this incredibly simple and effective habit.

Optimize Nutrition with Animal-Based Foods:

Prioritize animal-based nutrition to fuel your body with essential nutrients. Aim to include a minimum of 30 grams of protein from animal foods in each meal. Animal-based proteins are highly digestible and provide the building blocks your gut needs for repair and maintenance. If you've been struggling to digest animal foods or have been avoiding them, it's a clear sign that your Upper GI system needs support too. Explore my DIY course, Healthy Belly Nutrition, to learn more about utilizing the simplicity and effectiveness of animal-based nutrition to heal your body.

Remove Inflammatory Foods:

To give your gut the love and repair it needs, removing inflammatory foods is key. Common culprits like gluten, grains, alcohol, processed/sugary foods, and toxic water should be eliminated. Temporarily cutting out dairy can also speed up the healing process. Remember, real foods aren't the root cause; it's your immune system's response. Let's identify what's triggering it for lasting relief.

Clean Hydration:

Clean water is likely more important than clean food. Start by ensuring you're hydrating with clean water that's free from harmful toxins. You want to consume about 55% of your body weight in ounces of water. This is my top recommendation for water filters and purification systems to help you sip confidently. It’s triple filtered, structured and remineralized! Pulse, I love supporting small businesses like these :) Here’s a 10% off code for you: thehealthybellyfix
